What additional costs may arise?

In most cases it is sufficient to change only the alternator belt (or serpentine belt) and there are no additional costs. Occasionally, however, an additional change of alternator belt tensioner and pulley makes sense, as the material costs are low compared to the labour costs.

If the mechanic has already finished disassembling everything, the additional costs are low and you can save some money. The most complex part is always the uncovering of the individual parts. The whole thing of course only makes sense if the parts also show wear.

What does an alternator belt do?

The alternator belt (or drive belt) is a rubber belt up to 160 cm long and is responsible for transferring power from the engine to the auxiliary units. In addition to the alternator, the alternator belt also operates the power steering, the water pump, the hydraulic pump and the fan.

What causes alternator belt to break / snap?

Modern alternator belts are extremely durable and a broken / snapped alternator belt is quite rare. However, the alternator belt is a part subject to wear and tear which wears out over time due to friction.

This reduces the thickness of the rubber more and more, which makes a torn alternator belt possible. It is therefore recommended to keep to the prescribed replacement intervals at all times to avoid a snapped alternator belt.

Symptoms of a bad alternator belt

In order to avoid expensive and annoying subsequent damage, it is important to recognize signs / symptoms of a snapped alternator belt at an early stage It is possible that a snapped belt (especially if this happens while driving) remains unnoticed at first. The following symptoms indicate a broken alternator belt:
1. Engine temperature light is switched on

An important indication is the temperature rise in the motor. In modern vehicles, there is a measuring display in the cockpit which changes to the red area if the engine temperature rises.

2. Squeaking noises coming from the engine bay

A noticeable symptom of snapped alternator belt is a squeaky sound from the engine bay. Such a squeaking sound can in many cases be attributed to a broken alternator belt.

3. Steering becomes more difficult

As the alternator is no longer capable of functioning, the power steering system no longer receives any power and the steering becomes very cumbersome (slow and heavy).

5. Optical inspection: Small cracks visible

If a visual inspection reveals small cracks in the alternator belt, it should also be replaced promptly. With such heavy traces of use, it will probably snap soon.

Can I drive with a broken alternator belt?

Unlike other defective car parts, a broken alternator belt allows you to continue driving, but it is recommended that you only let the car roll out to the next safe place.

What happens if you drive with a bad or broken alternator?

The alternator belt also drives the alternator and this starts the car battery. Without the alternator, electric accessories such as A/C, radio or plugs will only run on the remaining energy of the car battery. When this energy is used up, most (newer) cars switch off all electronics to protect the car from serious damage.

An alternator belt should be changed approx. every 70,000 – 100,000 km or every 7 years, whatever comes first. However, there is no definitive answer to this question. An alternator belt can also last much longer. It is worthwhile, however, to regularly check it visually, for example as part of an inspection. Wear and tear can be detected at an early stage by means of cracks or porous areas.

The average alternator belt replacement time will take roughly between 30 – 60 minutes, provided that no further work is necessary.
